My favorite week of the year....gingerbread inferencing!! What?! Are you wondering why this is my favorite week of the year? BECAUSE IT IS SO.MUCH.FUN!!! We started the week reading different variations of the gingerbread boy stories! We created our class gingerbread man, and voted on the name "Ginger". Then, the drama started!! We came to school Wednesday to find CAUTION tape all around our room and our gingerbread man was missing!! And so we started using our inferencing skills with the evidence and clues we were given to find our missing friend! We made our initial suspect list (I'm only a little offended I was at the top of the list!) and then narrowed it down based on new clues each day! Several of our own girls were on the suspect list, so it was good to have a handprint as evidence so we could clear their names! Finally, after putting our last clue (a picture puzzle) together, we were able to find our suspect...Mrs. Margocs!! We brainstormed a plan for how to ask for him back...Using nice words & manners were at the top of the list! It probably didn't hurt that we traded her some real gingerbread man cookies! The students were the best little detectives and I am happy to report that "Ginger" is safely back in our room!

It has been a busy week of learning!! In math, we are working hard on learning the basics of combining numbers and I have to say...I am impressed with how quickly these smarties have caught on to addition this year!
In science, we learned all about magnets and objects that they attract and repel. We also talked about motion and the different ways things move! The best part of this was testing racecars on different inclines to see how they moved!! Check out some of their ramps below!
During our water unit of study, kindergarteners learned all about properties of water and what it can be used for! We had fun exploring water with different cups, funnels, and measuring tools. We also tested a variety of objects to determine if they would sink or float.
Phew!! It has been a busy week learning about all of these wonderful natural resources. It is amazing how interested kids are in materials that are found right outside on our playground. We learned all about rocks and the things that we use them for! You might be surprised to find all of the things in our world that are made of rocks. We had fun going on a rock hunt & searching for things around the campus that are made of rock! Students used the rocks that they brought in to complete a report on the physical properties. There were some small pebbles, some larger rocks, some where shiny and some were bumpy! We also had fun experimenting with rocks and testing them to see which ones sink and float. Be sure to ask your student about this experiment! Toward the end of our week, we had so much fun sifting through sand and soil learning what each is made of. Students got to participate in a fun experiment to demonstrate how sand is made from rocks. *Cue them bringing home a bag of sugar! All in the name of science, I promise! :)
We spent a lot of time last week learning all about 2D or "plane" shapes. We learned that they are flat, have sides & corners (vertices) and can be found in many places in our real world. Check out the pictures of some of these smart kiddos creating their own pictures of 2D shape items.
We will be collecting funds for “Coins for Coats” on October 27th--next Thursday! Please bring in your spare change to donate to the Round Rock Serving Center’s mission to provide a winter coat to children in need right here in Round Rock ISD. The class with the biggest donation from each grade level will earn flashlight time in the library!
