We have been working very hard on learning all that we can about plants! We all know that plants need soil, water and sunlight to thrive...but did you know that venus fly traps can count!?! We do!! We learned today (after checking out our venus fly trap class mascot!) that the plant will only snap hits trap shut when prey has bumped its trigger hairs at least twice in a 20 second span. WHAT!? How do they do that! Fascinating! We have learned all about how plants adapt to their habitat, how seeds move around and many other amazing plant facts!! Below you will see a quick screen shot of some of our learnings...definitely not all of them! There is also a screen shot for the website "Kiddle". This has been PERFECT for our researching unit! Students have been able to research and watch videos/see pictures of plants without the fear of inappropriate things popping up on the computer. This search engine is "like Google for kids". It is great!! I highly reccommend it for home as well!

During math workshop we are working on different ways to think about numbers. Check out our number map today. These are all things that YOUR smarties thought of about the number eight!
This is great practice for getting students to think about different ways to represent any number...it translates very well to our problem solving notebooks! This week we have been busy working on identifying coins and their values. It is so great to see kiddos make the connection between presidents that we have been learning about and the coins! Their faces just light up when they realize that they know who is on a coin! I am thrilled with how much they have remembered about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington! They are making connections like crazy....which often leads us into looking up pictures of George Washington's clothes or Mount Rushmore! I LOVE it!! My mom is a retired government teacher...so I come by the love of history naturally. We read two great books this week. Grace for President is about a young lady who is just shocked that there have not been any women presidents and decides to run for office! We also read Duck for President. It did not take my students long to realize who the better candidate would be. Check out the list of things that they liked about each candidate. Tomorrow we will create our voter registration cards, discuss the process of voting, and then get busy casting our votes and finding out who the winner is between Duck and Grace.
*UPDATE: Grace won by a landslide!!! Enjoy a quick glimpse into the future....our 100 year old pictures, for your enjoyment!! We had a busy 100th day of school. We spent time thinking about what we would do with $100, what we will look like as 100 year olds, blowing paper clips 100 inches across the room, tossing cubes in buckets for 100 seconds, writing our name as many times as possible for 100 seconds...the list goes on and on! We also enjoyed a special presentation about the Chinese Spring Festival! We learned that it is the year of the monkey and that the festival consists of 15 days with family, friends, food & fireworks! What fun! I can't think of anybody else I'd rather spend the 100th day with than these old folks!
I am kicking myself that it has taken me so long to get these pictures up here for you all to see!! We wrapped up our "Family Matters" Project Based Learning and these are pictures from our showcase. During this project, students learned a lot about their own families. They made family trees and interviewed theif family members about special holidays they celebrate, clothes they wear, food they eat and other interesting things. It was so fun to see the differences amongst all of our families...but also to learn just how much we all have in common.
