We spent last week learning all about word families! It was so fun to see what words the kiddos found. At the end of our study unit, we finished up with a word family sort on the computers. Here is the link to that if you are interested in doing it at home!

We brainstormed, we did a rough draft, we did some peer sharing and editing and then revised our stories and fancied them up!! By the end of the week, everyone had a story published and ready to be shared at the "Author's Tea Party". It was SO perfect that this week we also got to hear Aaron Reynolds, children's author, speak! He was super entertaining and we LOVED having him! He told us all about the process of writing a picture book. Check out some of our weekly pictures below!
During our Math Workshop we have been working extremely hard at becoming good problem solvers. We read the word problems and look for important words or phrases that help us identify how we will solve the problem. We highlight the numbers we need as well as those key words & phrases. As any good problem solver knows, you need to check your work a few different ways to make sure your answer is correct. We brainstorm the different ways that we can show our answer. Then, we write a sentence explaining our thinking! This helps to make our thinking and problem solving visible to others! Check out what we came up with today!!
We have spent time on and off all year long learning about letter sounds, but we really honed in on vowel sounds over the last few weeks. These kinder smarties quickly reminded me that vowels make 2 sounds!! We did sorts, games, made books, and circle maps as well as sang along to our favorite vowel song..."Vowel bat". Check out some of the short o words we came up with! I am also including a link to starfall here ( http://www.starfall.com/n/level-a/learn-to-read/load.htm) so your kiddos can use the website we did in computer stations to hear short vowel stories. Once again...I am blown away by them!
